World Music Theater Festival 2002
March 9 - April 20

new music theater from Africa, South America and Asia From March 9th through April 20th, the World Music Theater Foundation will present the third World Music Theater Festival. The programme will include six new music theater productions from South Africa, India, Argentina, Indonesia, Brazil, and Japan. These opera, musical and dance theater performances have been created especially for the festival and will be performed in 20 cities and 26 theaters throughout The Netherlands and Belgium. The festival opens on March 9th in the Stadsschouwburg in Utrecht with the world premiere of the South-African production SAFARI. The latest production by the young theater director Brett Bailey, explores Africa's colonial remnants. In the Kathak production Kathak-Roopmati from India, the well-known director and dancer Birju Maharaj makes a highly original contribution to contemporary North-Indian music theater. The Rotterdamse Schouwburg will host the premiere of the second tango opera ever made: Orestes' Last Tango, now being created in Buenos Aires, the cradle of Tango. The renowned, internationally active Indonesian theater maker, choreographer and dancer Miroto will bring his company with their latest creation Dancing Shadows. Miroto translates Javanese tradition into contemporary theater dance. The moving music, tales in song, dance, acrobatics and exciting rhythms of Mama Africa, Balé Folclórico da Bahía convey the deep-rooted African traditions in the daily lives of Brazil's black population. The festival will close in Amsterdam's Muziektheater with the premiere of a truly remarkable Kabuki performance, Kagami Jishi, performed by the entirely female company Musume Kabuki from Japan's Nagoya.

PERSBERICHT

Wereld Muziektheater Festival 2002
9 maart - 20 april
